About Lynn Aguilar, LMFT

EMDR Therapist and EMDR Consultant Lynn Aguilar

Hi, I’m Lynn,

I know that seeking therapy can be an overwhelming process. I’ve been where you are now.

I  hope I can make it easier for you by sharing a little about me, and how I view my work as a therapist.

I retired from accounting in 2008, went back to school for an additional degree, and began treating clients in  2014.  Many people consider this an odd combination of vocations but I have always had a strong interest in eating disorders because I have struggled with disordered eating for most of my life.  Initially, my work was focused around disordered eating and trauma related issues.   As I worked through my own eating issues, I quickly realized that it wasn’t at all about the food.  It was about what had happened to me as a child.

What I also discovered was that most clients who have food issues that seriously impact their lives,  also tend to have childhood wounds and, in reverse, as the stories of my clients trauma unfolds in session, it often becomes apparent that they have problems with food as well, even if that was not the original reason they started therapy.

It became clear to me that treating the trauma was the real focus of the therapy, whether or not their eating patterns were affected.  That is how I started helping people to “grow themselves back up”.

There is no single right way to help clients and each one may need a different approach.  I use a variety of techniques, primarily EMDR and IFS (internal family systems).  I provide education to help clients understand that it is not what is wrong with them, but what happened to them, or even what didn’t happen that should have, like nurturing and affirming.  My focus is on exploring how your current lived experience  is, in a sense, a re-enactment of childhood experiences that have shaped your current thoughts, feelings and behaviors,  and how the re-enactments are showing up in your current relationships. We enter into this exploration together using relational EMDR therapy integrated with attachment theory.

Coping mechanisms that served a purpose in the past may not be working for you in the present.

I am a certified EMDR clinician and an Approved EMDR Consultant and have expanded my practice to include consultation for therapists.  I am also a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and trained in  (IFS) Internal Family Systems.

I believe therapy is a collaborative endeavor, and it is important to me to honor clients autonomy in deciding how therapy will progress. I strongly believe that the biggest factor in positive growth and healing in therapy is a result of the relationship between the therapist and client. Healing cannot happen if you do not trust your therapist or if you feel judged. To that end, I strive to make every session feel as safe as possible for you.

I have hope for each of my clients and I believe that each one has the ability to heal and to create improvement in their lives.  I would love to be able to help you do that. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have to see if we would be a good fit.
